FOR + BY MOVEMENTS
We will use mixed-methods liberatory research and evaluation practices, rooted in the traditions of activist scholars whose work transformed knowledge and how it is created. This approach is participatory, justice- and equity-oriented, and focused on building power with communities.
Research: Research builds the foundation of your narrative change roadmap. It tells you where to focus limited resources for maximum impact and effectiveness. Rooted in liberatory research principles, we advise, design, and lead projects focused on building power with and for communities through:
Media and audience analysis
Experimentation and message testing
Qualitative community engagement
Translation: For a narrative intervention to succeed, narrative and audience insights can sharpen your strategy. You don't need to reinvent the wheel. We translate existing research and frameworks to support your goals. With over a decade of experience translating academic and sector research into strategy, let’s bridge the gap between insights and
action.
Capacity Building: For new practices to stick, teams need dedicated space to learn, collaborate, and practice narrative change strategies together. Let’s increase your team's capacity through:
Tailored workshops
Curriculum development
Expert facilitation
Hands-on operational assistance
Evaluation and Learning: Tracking the impact of your work is a critical piece of any narrative change strategy. How do you know if you are moving in the right direction? How can you prove your work made a difference? Let’s partner to build actionable and useful measurement frameworks, including:
Building your impact, measurement, and learning (IML) approach
Leading narrative and systems change evaluations
Crafting compelling impact stories
Let’s build narrative
power together
Annie Neimand, PhD, is a social movement sociologist leading research-to-action, learning, and evaluation projects for progressive and left movements and organizations. She specializes in narrative, mindset, and systems change, having directed projects such as Risingnarratives.com and Brokeproject.org, and co-created foundational public interest communications frameworks while at the Center for Public Interest Communications. Her writing is regularly featured in Stanford Social Innovation Review. It includes some of their most popular articles, such as "The Science of What Makes People Care," "How to Measure Narrative Change," "How to Tell Stories About Complex Issues," and "Stop Raising Awareness Already."
“Annie is one of my favorite narrative change collaborators! She is brilliant and a joy to work with. I've worked on several narrative-related projects with her, and I learn something new every time.
Her work on Rising Narratives with RadComms and Rising Majority and her contribution to the field of narrative evaluation, that is widely referenced today, speak to her expertise. I also appreciate her ability to simplify complex and confusing jargon and concepts in ways that allow us to weave them with action. Her clarity of purpose- that narrative change must ultimately lead to racial justice and systems change- is inspiring and energizing. We've facilitated, presented, written, and have even done karaoke together several times. If you have a chance to work with her, please do. I can assure you you won't regret it!” - Nikko Viquiera, Deputy Senior VP of Programs at Race Forward
“Annie was an invaluable partner as we elevated our approach to measuring the impact of multiple film campaigns. She brought deep expertise to the design and implementation of experimental measurement approaches and played a critical role in integrating measurement into campaign strategy and goal setting from the outset. Her thoughtful guidance helped ensure our evaluation efforts were both rigorous and actionable, making her a trusted partner throughout the process.” -Melody Mohebi, PhD, former Director of Measurement & Insights, Participant Media
“Working with Annie on the Rising Majority project was one of the most collaborative and intellectually rewarding research experiences I’ve had in a while.
As director of the research, she created an environment where thoughtful inquiry, curiosity, and rigor could coexist with true partnership. She has a remarkable ability to hold the big-picture goals of a project while also making space for collaborators to contribute their expertise in meaningful ways. Beyond her technical expertise, Annie is simply the kind of collaborator who elevates everyone around her. She builds research processes that are participatory rather than extractive, values people’s contributions, and keeps both the human relationships and the research integrity at the center of the work. I would enthusiastically work with her again and again whenever possible.” -Yewande O. Addie, PhD, MPH, Rising Majority Narrative Assessor
